Five horizontal watercolor brush strokes in ink blue and cool ash with a soft clay accent on white, with a Saul Bass–style ink icon of a boulder on a slanted line with a looping arrow returning it to the start.

Sisyphane

SISS-ih-fayn

Origins

From Sisyphus, condemned to repeat a futile task, blended with bane, a source of harm.

Meaning

Sisyphane is the point where using stops delivering and we still cannot stop reaching for it.

The relief is thin, the consequences are thick, and the promise keeps failing to cash. We keep pushing the same boulder, hoping this time it will stay up.

What makes it unbearable is the clarity. We know it is not working, and we do it anyway.

Usage

I was in Sisyphane, chasing a payoff that wasn’t there anymore.
